There are very few countries with official government offices for registering copyright, but the USA is one that does have this an option for its citizens.
DO I HAVE TO REGISTER WORK WITH THE US COPYRIGHT OFFICE TO BE PROTECTED?
No. In general, registration at the US copyright office is voluntary. Copyright legally exists from the moment the work is created. See US Copyright Office FAQ here.
Registration with the US Copyright Office is NOT mandatory, unless you intend to file a federal lawsuit in the case of a copyright dispute. Bare in mind, when a copyright dispute emerges, the majority only want their work removed and most are unlikely to take their case to court due to the time and cost of this process.
The cost for filing with the US Copyright Office starts at $45 for a single application, rising to $500 depending on the type work.
Timescales for completion of a copyright registration can be anywhere from 3 - 9 months (approximately) depending on the complexity of the application.
Legal copyright disputes in the US, are now mainly handled by the The Copyright Claims Board (CCB). On filing a claim with the CCB you may at that point be advised to register your work with the US copyright office, either before filing or simultaneously with the claim.
